CHARLEY <\/strong>(genuinely)
\nLook , …\u00a0 I, … Look kid I …. (gently)
\nHow much you weigh slugger?
\n(nostalgically) When you weighed one hundred and sixty-eight pounds.\u00a0 You were beautiful. You could’ve been another Billy Conn. That skunk we got you for a manager … he brought you along too fast.<\/p>\n

TERRY<\/strong>
\nIt wasn’t him Charley.\u00a0 It was you.
\n(years of abuse crying out in him)
\nRemember that night in the Garden, you came down in my dressing room and says, “Kid, this ain’t your night \u2014 we’re going for the price on Wilson.”
\nYou remember that? \u00a0This ain’t your night. My night I could have taken Wilson apart.
\nSo what happens he gets the title shot outdoors in a ballpark \u2013 and what do I get \u2014 a one-way ticket to Palookaville.
\nYou was my brother Charley. You should of looked after me a little bit
\nYou should have taken care of me just a little bit so I wouldn\u2019t have taken them dives for the short-end money.<\/p>\n

CHARLEY<\/strong> (defensively)
\nI always had a bet down for you. You saw some money.<\/p>\n

TERRY <\/strong>(agonized)
\nYou don’t understand!<\/p>\n

CHARLEY<\/strong>
\nI tried to keep you in good with Johnny.<\/p>\n

TERRY<\/strong>
\nYou don’t understand!
\nI coulda had class.
\nI coulda been a contender.
\nI coulda been somebody.
\nInstead of a bum, which is what I am.\u00a0 Let’s face it …
\nIt was you, Charley.<\/p>\n

Charley takes a long, fond look at Terry.\u00a0 Then he glances quickly out the window.<\/em><\/p>\n

CHARLEY<\/strong>
\nturning back to Terry, his tone suddenly changed<\/em>
\nOkay \u2014 Okay. I’ll tell him … I couldn’t find you. Ten to one he won’t believe me.\u00a0Here\u00a0… Here take this (HANDS HIM THE GUN)

\nAs Terry jumps out. A bus is just starting up a little further along the street.<\/em>
