{"id":11338,"date":"2013-06-22T06:08:22","date_gmt":"2013-06-22T11:08:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.terada.ca\/discourse\/?p=11338"},"modified":"2021-07-23T13:25:44","modified_gmt":"2021-07-23T17:25:44","slug":"preontological","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.terada.ca\/discourse\/2013\/06\/22\/preontological\/","title":{"rendered":"preontological Johnston"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Johnston, Adrian. <em>\u017di\u017eek\u2019s Ontology: A Transcendental Materialist Theory of Subjectivity. <\/em>Northwestern University Press, 2008<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Grund<\/em>, rather than being the hard, ontological substance behind the ephemeral facade of experience (as it&#8217;s been characterized here thus far), is, in fact, &#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: 12pt; font-style: italic;\">preontological<\/span>&#8220;: &#8220;The enigma resides in the fact that Ground is ontologically non-accomplished, &#8216;less&#8217; than Existence, but it is precisely as such that it corrodes the consistency of the ontological edifice of Existence from within (\u017di\u017eek 1996b,62; \u017di\u017eek 1997a,7).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <em>The Abyss of Freedom<\/em>, \u017di\u017eek proclaims that &#8220;the Ground is in itself ontologically hindered, hampered, its status is in a radical sense <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: 12pt; font-style: italic;\">preontological<\/span> \u2014 it only &#8216;is&#8217;<em> sous rature<\/em>, in the mode of its own withdrawal&#8221; (Zizek1997a,6).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And in <em>The Plague of Fantasies<\/em>, he utilizes this interpretation of the Schellingian Real as <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: 12pt; font-style: italic;\">preontological<\/span> (instead of it being the ontological per se) to identify Schelling as a thinker who completes Kant&#8217;s insight into the <span style=\"background-color: #ffff00; font-weight: bold;\">&#8220;ontological incompleteness of reality&#8221;<\/span> 76<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Sous rature<\/strong><\/em> is a strategic philosophical device originally developed by Martin Heidegger. Usually translated as &#8216;under erasure&#8217;, it involves the crossing out of a word within a text, but allowing it to remain legible and in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u017di\u017eek quote<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">German Idealism outlined the precise contours of this <strong>pre-ontological<\/strong> dimension which precedes and eludes the ontological constitution of reality&#8230; Kant was the first to detect this crack in the ontological edifice of reality, if (what we experience as) &#8220;objective reality&#8221; is not simply given&#8221; out there, &#8220;waiting to be perceived by the subject, but an artificial composite constituted through the subject&#8217;s active participation \u2014 that is, through the act of transcendental synthesis \u2014 then the question crops up sooner or later <strong>what is the status of the uncanny<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-weight: bold; font-size: 12pt;\">X<\/span> which <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: 11pt;\">precedes<\/span> transcendentally constituted reality? It was Schelling, of course, who gave the most detailed account of this <span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-weight: bold; font-size: 12pt;\">X<\/span> in his notion of the Ground of Existence.. .the <span style=\"color: red; font-weight: bold;\">pre-logical Real<\/span> which remains for ever the elusive Ground of Reason which can never be grasped &#8220;as such,&#8221; merely glimpsed in the very gesture of its withdrawal (\u017di\u017eek 1997c, 208) 77<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Johnston, Adrian. \u017di\u017eek\u2019s Ontology: A Transcendental Materialist Theory of Subjectivity.
