Here we are insisting on the late Lacanian conception of the symptom as <span style=\"color: #ff0000; font-weight: bold; font-size: 11pt;\">sinthome<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>In this conception, a signifier is married to <span style=\"font-weight: bold; color: blue; font-size: 11pt;\">jouissance<\/span>, a signifier is instituted in the <span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-weight: bold; font-size: 12pt;\">real<\/span>, outside the signifying chain but at the same time internal to it. This paradoxical role of the symptom can help us understand the paradoxical role of <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: 11pt;\">fantasy<\/span>.\u00a0 <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: 11pt;\">Fantasy<\/span> gives discourse its consistency because it opposes the symptom (Ragland-Sullivan, 1991:16). Hence, if the <strong>symptom is an encounter with the<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-weight: bold; font-size: 12pt;\">real<\/span>, with a traumatic point that resists symbolisation, and if the discursive has to arrest the <span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-weight: bold; font-size: 12pt;\">real<\/span> and repress <span style=\"font-weight: bold; color: blue; font-size: 11pt;\">jouissance<\/span> in order to produce reality, then the negation of the <span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-weight: bold; font-size: 12pt;\">real<\/span> within <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: 11pt;\">fantasy<\/span> can only be thought in terms of opposing, of stigmatising the symptom. This is then the relation between symptom and <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: 11pt;\">fantasy<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The self-consistency of a symbolic construction of reality depends on the harmony instituted by<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: 11pt;\">fantasy<\/span>.<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This <span style=\"color: red; font-weight: bold;\">fantasmatic harmony<\/span> <strong>can only be sustained by the neutralisation of the symptom and of the<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-weight: bold; font-size: 12pt;\">real<\/span>, by a <span style=\"color: red; font-weight: bold;\"> negation of the generalised <\/span><span style=\"color: green; font-weight: bold; font-size: 11pt;\">lack<\/span> <strong>that crosses the field of the social.<\/strong> (Stavrakakis 1999, 64-65)<\/p>\n<p>But how is this done? If social fantasy produces the self-consistency of a certain construction it can do so only by presenting the symptom as \u0091an alien, disturbing intrusion, and not as the point of eruption of the otherwise hidden truth of the existing social order\u0092 (\u008e\u017d 1991 Looking Awry:40). The social fantasy of a harmonious social or natural<br \/>\norder can only be sustained if all the persisting disorders can be attributed to an alien intruder. [&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>When, however, the <strong>dependence of fantasy on the symptom <\/strong>is revealed, then the play \u2014 \u0097the relation\u0097 \u2014 between the symptom and fantasy reveals itself as another mode of the play between the real and the symbolic\/imaginary nexus producing reality.
