{"id":11708,"date":"2013-08-16T16:23:57","date_gmt":"2013-08-16T21:23:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.terada.ca\/discourse\/?p=11708"},"modified":"2013-08-16T16:48:25","modified_gmt":"2013-08-16T21:48:25","slug":"mcgowan-democracy-enjoyment-excess","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.terada.ca\/discourse\/2013\/08\/16\/mcgowan-democracy-enjoyment-excess\/","title":{"rendered":"mcgowan democracy enjoyment excess"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>McGowan, Todd. <em>Enjoying What We Don\u2019t Have: The Political Project of Psychoanalysis<\/em>. 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Psychoanalysis suggests that enjoyment will almost always triumph over knowledge, even \u2013 or especially \u2013 when this <span style=\"color: red; font-weight: bold; font-size: 11pt;\">enjoyment<\/span> occurs at the expense of our self-interest. 190<\/p>\n<p>[Psychoanalysis] represents an effort to mobilize our knowledge about enjoyment and its priority in order to make evident the identification of emancipation with enjoyment. &#8230; psychoanalysis reveals that <span style=\"color: red; font-weight: bold; font-size: 11pt;\">enjoyment<\/span> derives from emancipation from the power of authority. 191<\/p>\n<p>As the existence of conservative populism shows, there is a conservative form of <span style=\"color: red; font-weight: bold; font-size: 11pt;\">enjoyment<\/span>, but this form borrows its structure from emancipatory politics. To be effective, conservative populists must convince their adherents that they are challenging social authority even at the moment when they cede themselves to it.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: red; font-weight: bold; font-size: 11pt;\">Enjoyment<\/span> <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>stems from an excess<\/strong><\/span>, from going beyond what social authority permits. &#8230; <span style=\"color: red; font-weight: bold; font-size: 11pt;\">enjoyment<\/span> is proper to the forces of emancipation who work to free us from social constraints imposed by authority figures. In this sense, <span style=\"color: green; font-weight: bold;\">democracy<\/span> is the social arrangement organized around <span style=\"color: red; font-weight: bold; font-size: 11pt;\">enjoyment<\/span> and its <span style=\"color: blue; font-weight: bold;\">excess<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>But <span style=\"color: green; font-weight: bold;\">democracy<\/span> has always been a signifier replete with <span style=\"color: red; font-weight: bold; font-size: 11pt;\">enjoyment<\/span>, an indication of an <span style=\"color: blue; font-weight: bold;\">excess<\/span> that no social structure can adequately contain. <span style=\"color: green; font-weight: bold;\">Democracy<\/span> is <span style=\"color: blue; font-weight: bold;\">excessive<\/span> because it strips away all legitimacy justifying social authority.<\/p>\n<p>Capitalism without <span style=\"color: green; font-weight: bold;\">democracy<\/span> &#8230; Capitalism delivers the goods \u2013 and the good \u2013 just as efficiently, if not more so, without <span style=\"color: green; font-weight: bold;\">democracy<\/span> as with it. &#8230; rather than being a good that we strive to attain without ever fully attaining it (an impossible justice to come), [:) DERRIDA ALERT] <span style=\"color: green; font-weight: bold;\">democracy<\/span> <strong>becomes the lost object animating our desire<\/strong>, an object that impels us to act against our interest.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: green; font-weight: bold;\">Democracy<\/span> today does not help us to accumulate goods (or arrive at the good) but instead functions as a barrier on this path. Time spent insisting on freedom and equality, or even time spent engaged in democratic deliberation, is time that one cannot spend in the act of accumulation of goods. <strong>From the perspective of the service of goods, it is wasted time.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In fact, <span style=\"color: green; font-weight: bold;\">democracy<\/span> requires that we sacrifice our interest on behalf of it: we must put at risk and even abandon the goods that global capitalism offers us in order to achieve it. This<strong> demand for sacrifice<\/strong>, far from lessening the appeal of <span style=\"color: green; font-weight: bold;\">democracy<\/span>, actually constitutes it as desirable. 194<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>McGowan, Todd.
