Routledge, 2012.<\/p>\n<p>The mechanism of <span style=\"color: red; font-weight: bold; font-size: 11pt;\">disavowal<\/span> should be understood as a defense, not against the lawgiving Other\u2019s demand that the child sacrifice jouissance, but <strong>against the inadequacy of the lawgiving Other<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: red; font-weight: bold; font-size: 11pt;\">Disavowal<\/span><strong> is a creative attempt to prop up the Law and to set limits to the excess in<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: bold; color: blue; font-size: 11pt;\">jouissance<\/span> experienced due to the child\u2019s problematic relation to the first Other.<\/p>\n<p>The <span style=\"color: red; font-weight: bold; font-size: 11pt;\">disavowal<\/span> of the lawgiving Other might be described in the following terms: \u201cI know very well that my father [or father figure] hasn\u2019t forced me to give up my mother and my corresponding <span style=\"font-weight: bold; color: blue; font-size: 11pt;\">jouissance<\/span>, but I\u2019m going to make believe that the force of Law exists with someone or something that represents my father.\u201d 78<\/p>\n<p>The mechanism of<span style=\"color: red; font-weight: bold; font-size: 11pt;\">disavowal<\/span>, as I have said, involves the maintenance of two contradictory pieces of knowledge together with a strongly held belief that one of the two pieces of knowledge is true. In matters of superstition \u2014 in which a belief is held despite evidence to the contrary\u2014therefore, <span style=\"color: red; font-weight: bold; font-size: 11pt;\">disavowal<\/span> is often pertinent. <\/p>\n<p>For example, \u201cI know very well that if, in one breath, I blow out all the flames of the candles on my birthday cake, my wish won\u2019t really come true, but nevertheless I believe it\u2019s true.
