New York: Verso, 2000.<\/p>\n<p>The subject cannot choose herself as subject without having first arrived at the point which is not a forced choice but an excluded or impossible choice.<\/p>\n<p>This is the <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8216;choice&#8217; of S<\/span><\/strong>, of unfreedom, of radical subordination to the Other, of the <strong>absolute determination of one&#8217;s actions by motives, interests and other causes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00; font-weight: bold;\">The subject first has to reach the point where it becomes impossible to articulate statements such as &#8216;I act&#8217; , or &#8216;I think&#8217;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Passage through this impossible point of one&#8217;s own non-being, where it seems that one can say of oneself only <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">&#8216;I am not&#8217;<\/span><\/strong>, however, is the fundamental condition of attaining the status of a free subject.<\/p>\n<p>Only at this point, after we have <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">followed the postulate of determinism to the end<\/span><\/strong>, does the <strong>&#8216;leftover&#8217; element<\/strong> that can serve as the basis for the <strong>constitution of the ethical subject appear<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; this experience of radical alienation at the basis of freedom &#8230; 32<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Zupan\u010di\u010d, Alenka.
