{"id":13036,"date":"2014-08-01T10:13:45","date_gmt":"2014-08-01T14:13:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.terada.ca\/discourse\/?p=13036"},"modified":"2014-08-01T10:13:45","modified_gmt":"2014-08-01T14:13:45","slug":"butler-review-of-parting-ways","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.terada.ca\/discourse\/2014\/08\/01\/butler-review-of-parting-ways\/","title":{"rendered":"Butler review of Parting Ways"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Judith Butler 2012 <em>Parting Ways: Jewishness and the Critique of Zionism<\/em> reviewed by Lisa Bhungalia\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/societyandspace.com\/reviews\/reviews-archive\/javier-auyero-and-debora-alejandra-swistun-flammable-environmental-suffering-in-an-argentine-shantytown-reviewed-by-thomas-perreault\/judith-butler-parting-ways-reviewed-by-bhungalia\/\" target=\"_blank\">right here<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Those familiar with Butler\u2019s scholarship will see a continuation of themes developed in her earlier work on gender and sexuality (<em>Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity<\/em> (1990) and <em>Bodies That Matter<\/em> (1993)) and her more recent ruminations on war and violence (<em>Precarious Life<\/em> (2004) and <em>Frames of War<\/em> (2010)). Across these earlier works, Butler has maintained a critical eye to the ways in which categories are constructed and identities policed \u2013 a project she extends to Jewish identity in this latest work on Jewishness, Zionism, and Palestine\/Israel.<\/p>\n<p><em>Parting Ways<\/em> originally began as a Jewish critique of state violence. However, it soon evolved into something much more: a political vision for the future of Israel\/Palestine. Butler\u2019s vision draws inspiration from Edward Said\u2019s reflections on diaspora and exile in <em>Freud and the Non-European<\/em> and <em>Reflections on Exile<\/em>, in which he asks what kind of ethos and politics might be forged through a consideration of the diasporic character of both Jewish and Palestinian history.<\/p>\n<p>Drawing on Said\u2019s insights, both Jewish and Palestinian identities, Butler argues, are constituted by their relation to alterity, \u2018a condition of having been scattered, having lived among those to whom one does not clearly belong\u2019 (Butler 2012, page 214).
