HYPOTHESIS AND THEORY, 03 June 2015<\/p>\n<p>Lacan considers the subject as an effect of this connotation and thus concludes that the subject is only half-said, which is expressed by the bar through S in the symbol for the subject: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>$<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of the process of signification, <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">$<\/span><\/strong> is the result of a dialectical tension. At the level of the message, speech functions to build images regarding who we are. These images make up the <strong>ego<\/strong>, but are selective imaginary self-representations that exclude certain signifiers.<\/p>\n<p>The unconscious subject consists of these\u201cforgotten\u201dsignifiers,acrosswhichthe<br \/>\nsubject is fundamentally scattered; hence the idea that the subject is divided.<\/p>\n<p>In neurosis this division is experienced as internal, hence the neurotic tendency<br \/>\nto repress, where as in psychosis it is experienced as disconnected from one\u2019s own intentions and as coming from without.<\/p>\n<p>In his interpretation a special signifier is installed during the<strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> Oedipus complex<\/span><\/strong>: the paternal signifier or <strong>Name-of-the-Father<\/strong>. This signifier nominates the desire of the maternal figure with which the child is first confronted, and it opens up the<br \/>\n<strong>dimension of the law<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Through the <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Name-of-the-Father<\/span><\/strong> people understand themselves and others in terms of rules and standards that one should obey.
