Vol. 51, Spindel Supplement<\/p>\n<p>I am convinced that the life sciences, in order to do real justice to the richly and unpredictably weird sorts of subjects humans are, must supplement the framing worldview of their spontaneous organicism with the notion that (phrased in Lacanian fashion) <strong>there is something in the organic more than the organic itself<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">a nonorganicity is immanent to the most complex forms of the organic<\/span><\/strong>. This is by virtue of the reality that, above certain thresholds, <strong>complexity of various sorts<\/strong> (be it biological, computational, institutional, social, or whatever) tends, within its given domain(s),to <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">generate inner antagonisms<\/span><\/strong>, bugs, glitches, loopholes, short circuits, and tensions (a fact to which any experienced computer programmer, tax lawyer, or government bureaucrat readily would testify).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Johnston, A.
