{"id":14008,"date":"2020-05-02T21:51:00","date_gmt":"2020-05-03T01:51:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.terada.ca\/discourse\/?p=14008"},"modified":"2020-07-17T20:56:05","modified_gmt":"2020-07-18T00:56:05","slug":"adrian-johnston","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.terada.ca\/discourse\/2020\/05\/02\/adrian-johnston\/","title":{"rendered":"Adrian Johnston"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Slavoj \u017di\u017eek and Dialectical Materialism Palgrave Macmillan; 1st ed. 2016 edition<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u017di\u017eek appears to me to hastily conflate two different possible senses of \u201ca materialism without matter\u201d<\/strong>: on the one hand, a materialism in which physical nature itself is deprived of its traditionally imagined positivity qua consistency, density, solidity, and unity, being envisioned instead as <strong>shot through and permeated with the immanent negativities of antagonisms, conflicts, discrepancies, and tensions<\/strong> (i.e., replacing God-like Nature-with-a-capital-N as an omnipotent and omniscient big Other or Whole\/Totality as One-All with, in hybrid Hegelian\u2013Lacanian\u2013\u017di\u017eekian parlance, weak [<em>ohnm\u00e4chtig<\/em>], rotten [<em>pourri<\/em>] nature[s] as a nonwhole\/not-all barred Real);<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>on the other hand, a \u201cmaterialism\u201d in which everything material is dissolved into the \u201cpurity\u201d of logical (whether symbolic or dialectical\u2013speculative) and\/or mathematical \u201cforms\u201d (an ontology difficult to distinguish from Pythagorianism and Platonic metaphysical realism\u2014one which, moreover, by no means entails necessarily either dialectics or anything material in a way distinguishable from the ideational).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am convinced that \u017di\u017eek possesses and frequently utilizes claims and arguments delineating a compelling, novel variant of dialectical materialism avoiding and surpassing both of these unpalatable options. As on previous occasions, I see myself as yet again conducting an immanent critique of \u017di\u017eek himself, challenging some of his utterances on the basis of wh t I take to be the most charitable and powerful reconstruction of a systematic \u017di\u017eekian metaphysics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All the same, this reconstruction requires carefully sifting through the blackletter contents of \u017di\u017eek\u2019s texts and selectively amending or disputing some of their details. Playing \u017di\u017eek contra \u017di\u017eek, and moving toward a conclusion to this intervention, what sketch can I offer of a dialectical materialism that remains faithful to the spirit, while at the same time criticizes the letter, of <em>Less Than Nothing<\/em> and <em>Absolute Recoil<\/em>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Specifically, biology is simultaneously, one, a natural science and region of nature emergent from but irreducible to physics and chemistry and, two, the threshold realm out of which arise sentient and sapient subjects.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>For a current, genuine dialectical materialism, and by contrast with the pseudomaterialist ontology of a panpsychism of the divided psyche, the incompleteness of being as the weakness\/rottenness of nature makes possible, without automatically or inevitably making actual, $.
