{"id":1458,"date":"2009-01-11T13:28:54","date_gmt":"2009-01-11T18:28:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.terada.ca\/discourse\/2009\/01\/11\/1458\/"},"modified":"2013-05-17T13:07:14","modified_gmt":"2013-05-17T18:07:14","slug":"1458","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.terada.ca\/discourse\/2009\/01\/11\/1458\/","title":{"rendered":"psychic operation of the norm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A redescription of the domain of psychic subjection is needed to make clear how social power produces <strong>modes of reflexivity<\/strong> at the same time as it <strong>limits forms of sociality<\/strong>.\u00a0 In other words, to the extent that norms operate as psychic phenomena, restricting and producing desire, they also govern the formation of the subject and circumscribe the domain of a livable sociality.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>The psychic operation of the norm offers a more insidious route for regulatory power than explicit coercion<\/strong>, one whose success allows its tacit operation within the social.\u00a0 And yet being psychic, the norm does not merely reinstate social power, it becomes formative and vulnerable in highly specific ways. <strong>The social categorizations that establish the vulnerability of the subject to language are themselves vulnerable to both psychic and historical change. <\/strong>21<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThis view counters an understanding of a psychic or linguistic normativity (as in some versions of the Symbolic) that is prior to the social or sets constraints on the social.
