{"id":1778,"date":"2009-01-29T12:21:36","date_gmt":"2009-01-29T17:21:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.terada.ca\/discourse\/?p=1778"},"modified":"2009-01-29T12:21:36","modified_gmt":"2009-01-29T17:21:36","slug":"being-or-having-the-phallus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.terada.ca\/discourse\/2009\/01\/29\/being-or-having-the-phallus\/","title":{"rendered":"being or having the phallus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u2018BEING\u2019 AND \u2018HAVING\u2019 THE PHALLUS<\/p>\n<p>According to Lacan, a defining moment in sexual development occurs when the infant perceives that its mother <strong>desires a phallus<\/strong> that she does not possess.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The child wishes <strong>to be<\/strong> the phallus in order to satisfy that desire\u2019, writes Lacan, but whereas the little boy actually \u2018<strong>has<\/strong>\u2019 the phallus, the little girl must \u2018<strong>be<\/strong>\u2019 it for someone else (when she grows up this will include her male partner who desires her phallic body). For Lacan, this is what differentiates the sexes: whereas \u2018<strong>having<\/strong>\u2019 the phallus seems fairly unproblematic for the lucky little boy, Lacan asserts that \u2018<strong>being<\/strong>\u2019 the phallus requires a sacrifice of femininity on the part of the girl: \u2018in order <strong>to be<\/strong> the phallus, that is to say, the signifier of the desire of the Other . . . a woman will reject an essential part of femininity, namely, all her attributes in the masquerade.
