The ‘liberation’ of the signifier vis-\u00e1-vis<\/em> the signified \u2014 the very precondition of hegemony \u2014 is what the Lacanian bar<\/strong> attempts to express.\u00a0 The other side of the coin, the contingent imposition of limits or partial fixations \u2014 without which we would be living in a psychotic universe \u2014 is what the notion of ‘point de capiton<\/strong>‘ brings about (66).<\/p>\n

The Lacanian real resists symbolization<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This double condition of necessity and impossibility makes possible, among other things,three endeavours:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. to understand the logics by which each of the two dimensions subverts the other<\/li>\n
  2. to look at the political productivity of this mutual subversion \u2014 that is, what it makes possible to understand about the workings of our societies which goes beyond what is achievable by unilateralizing either of the two poles;<\/li>\n
  3. to trace the genealogy of this undecidable logic, the way it was ALREADY subverting the central texts of our political and philosophical tradition (75).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Any normative order is nothing but the sedimented form of an initial ethical event (82).<\/p>\n
