{"id":6425,"date":"2011-02-09T13:30:11","date_gmt":"2011-02-09T18:30:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.terada.ca\/discourse\/?p=6425"},"modified":"2011-02-09T15:27:45","modified_gmt":"2011-02-09T20:27:45","slug":"kojeve-desire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.terada.ca\/discourse\/2011\/02\/09\/kojeve-desire\/","title":{"rendered":"Koj\u00e8ve desire for recognition the master"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The man who desires a thing humanly acts not so much to possess the <em>thing<\/em> as to make another <em>recognize<\/em> his <em>right &#8230; <\/em>to that thing. 40<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And Hegel says that the being that is incapable of putting its life in danger in order to attain ends that are not immediately vital \u2014i.e.<strong> the being that cannot risk its life in a Fight for <em>Recognition<\/em>, <\/strong>in a fight for pure <em>prestige<\/em> \u2014is <em>not<\/em> a truly <em>human<\/em> being. 41<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Therefore, human, historical, self-conscious existence is possible only where there are, or \u2014at least\u2014 where there have been, bloody fights, wars for prestige.\u00a0 And thus it was sounds of one of these Fights that Hegel heard while finishing his <em>Phenomenology<\/em>, in which he became conscious of himself by answering his question &#8220;What am I?&#8221;\u00a0 41<\/p>\n<p>The Master is the man who went all the way in a Fight for prestige, who risked his <em>life<\/em> in order to be <em>recognized<\/em> in his absolute superiority by <em>another<\/em> man.
