{"id":844,"date":"2008-09-18T22:59:06","date_gmt":"2008-09-19T02:59:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.terada.ca\/discourse\/?p=844"},"modified":"2008-09-19T12:36:53","modified_gmt":"2008-09-19T16:36:53","slug":"causal-mechanisms-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.terada.ca\/discourse\/2008\/09\/18\/causal-mechanisms-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Causal mechanisms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Can we come up with an approach to social science explanation that incorporates the non-intentional dimension, but avoids an overly descriptive or particularistic solution (\u00e0 la hermeneutics)<\/p>\n<p>[Elster&#8217;s] residual positivism comes in two forms. \u00a0In the first place, the notion of causal law continues to play a determining role in Elster&#8217;s worldview, in which case mechanisms do not succeed in offering us a distinctive enough alternative to the causal law model. \u00a0Secondly, the causal chain language deployed by Elster belies how the grammar of causal mechanisms is only one of several possible, and indeed contestable, grammars of intelligibility. \u00a0The question then becomes one of articulating an appropriate grammar of intelligibility in the social sciences.
