Could it be without milk?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This joke carries a certain real, even a\u00a0certain truth about the real, which has to do\u00a0precisely with the <strong>singular negativity<\/strong> introduced\u00a0or discovered by psychoanalysis.<\/p>\n<p>A negation of\u00a0something that is neither pure absence nor pure\u00a0nothing nor simply the complementary of what it\u00a0negates.<\/p>\n<p>At the moment it is spoken there\u00a0remains a trace of that which is not.<\/p>\n<p>This is a\u00a0dimension that is introduced (and made\u00a0possible) by the signifier yet is irreducible to it.<\/p>\n<p>It\u00a0has (or can have) a positive, albeit spectral,\u00a0quality, which can be formulated in the precise\u00a0terms of &#8220;<strong><em>with without<\/em><\/strong> (cream)&#8221; as irreducible to\u00a0both alternatives (cream\/no cream).<\/p>\n<p>Hegel says, &#8220;Negation is part of the positive identity of an object.&#8221; An object is not only what it is, you have to include what it is not.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Alenka Zupan\u010di\u010d\u00a0Not-Mother: On\u00a0Freud&#8217;s\u00a0Verneinung A guy goes into a restaurant and says to the\u00a0waiter: &#8220;Coffee without cream, please.&#8221; \u00a0The\u00a0waiter replies: &#8220;I am sorry sir, but we are out of\u00a0cream.
