Like Hamlet, <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: 12pt;\">Antigone<\/span> is a drama of a failed symbolic ritual \u2014 Lacan insisted on this continuity (he had analyzed Hamlet in the seminar that preceded <em>The Ethics of Psychoanalysis<\/em>, which deals with <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: 12pt;\">Antigone<\/span>). <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: 12pt;\">Antigone<\/span> does not stand for some extra-symbolic real, but for the pure signifier-her &#8220;purity&#8221; is that of a signifier. This is why, although her act is suicidal, the stakes are symbolic: her passion is the <span style=\"color: blue; font-weight: bold;\">death drive<\/span> at its purest-but here, precisely, we should distinguish between the Freudian <span style=\"color: blue; font-weight: bold;\">death drive<\/span> and the Oriental nirvana.
