{"id":980,"date":"2008-09-29T02:14:03","date_gmt":"2008-09-29T06:14:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.terada.ca\/discourse\/?p=980"},"modified":"2008-10-26T11:49:46","modified_gmt":"2008-10-26T15:49:46","slug":"about-the-logic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.terada.ca\/discourse\/2008\/09\/29\/about-the-logic\/","title":{"rendered":"What is a Logic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>GH\u00a0talk about the &#8220;<em>logic of a practice<\/em>&#8221; which<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>comprises the rules or grammar of the practice<\/em>, as well as <em>the conditions which make the practice both possible and vulnerable.<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This definition of &#8216;logic&#8217; and the way GH use it is hard to pin down.\u00a0 They give example of\u00a0of they use the term logic, speaking about the logic of:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; logic of chess playing: 1)\u00a0the dominant pattern of moves, strategies, counter-strategies, tactics and counter-tactics 2) Basic entities and types of relationships between pieces 3) rules of the game<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; logic of the market: 1) compirses a particular set of subject positions, objects (commodities and means of exchange) 2) systems of relations and meanings connecting subjects and objects, insitutional parameters (legal system) 3) Also the conditions that make possible the continued operation of a partiuclar market practice, as well as its potential vulnerabilities. <strong>What political struggles preceded its institution? What processes ensure its maintenance or question its hegemonic status? \u00a0Logics must also provide the means with which to answer these sorts of questions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">social logic<\/span> can characterize a practice or regime. Take the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Thatcherite regime<\/strong><\/span> which can be characterized as a <strong>network of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">social logics<\/span><\/strong>: 1) a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">social logic<\/span> of marketization and centralization, both of which were rooted in the philosophy of the New RIght &#8230;\u00a0 Once sedimented, the Thatcherite discourse signified the practices and aspiration of liberating the capitalist economy, with its attendant entrepreneurial practices, from the stranglehold of an overloaded and bureaucratic state, as well as from over-powerful trade unions which were smothering enterprise and innovation.\u00a0 On the other hand, Thatcherism came to represent a demand for a more restrictive, though more powerful, state that would regulate less, but more intensively. [endif] >\n\n\n<p style=\"margin: 5.05pt 0in; text-align: justify;\" mce_style=\"margin: 5.05pt 0in; text-align: justify;\">The the <strong>audit regim<\/strong>e: a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\" mce_style=\"color: #ff0000;\">social logic <\/span>of competition. atomization, hierarchy, instrumetalization<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p style=\"margin: 5.05pt 0in; text-align: justify;\" mce_style=\"margin: 5.05pt 0in; text-align: justify;\">The social logic of <strong>competition<\/strong> provided a groundwork for actors interact with each other as rivals, of competing to secure income from students, research councils and private companies; the social logic of <strong>atomization<\/strong> \u201cindividuating institutions and persons as independent entities \u2026\u201d rendering them abstract appetitive, rational optimizers; the social logic of <strong>hierarchy<\/strong> triumphed the installation of business structures of governance and \u2018accountability\u2019 and the social logic of <strong>instrumentalization<\/strong> downplayed the \u201cintrinsic and processual qualities of teaching and research in favour of their instrumental or exchange value\u201d (172).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\" mce_style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Logic of apartheid<\/span><\/strong>, composed of\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\" mce_style=\"color: #ff0000;\">social logics<\/span> of\n\n\n<ul>\n\t\n\n<li>'enforced separation'<\/li>\n\n\n\t\n\n<li>'segregationism'<\/li>\n\n\n\t\n\n<li>'non-racialism'<\/li>\n\n\n\t\n\n<li>'democracy'<\/li>\n\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n<blockquote><span style=\"color: #000000;\" mce_style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\" mce_style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Social logics<\/span> are also constructed and named by the analyst. Thus, even though they take their cue from existing self-interpretatons such logics are not reducible to them. 139<\/span><\/blockquote>\n\n\nQuestion: If social logics \"characterize practices in a particular social domain\", then we need to be able to pinpoint practices first, in order to characterize them.\n\n\n<blockquote><span style=\"color: #000000;\" mce_style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\" mce_style=\"color: #ff0000;\">social logics<\/span> enable us to characterize practices in a particular social domain, say the <strong>practices\u00a0of consumption and exchange within an economy,<\/strong> or an <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\" mce_style=\"color: #ff0000;\">entire\u00a0regime<\/span> of practices, whether Thatcherism, apartheid, or the audit regime of a particular university for example 133.<\/span>\n\n<\/blockquo ><--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GH\u00a0talk about the &#8220;logic of a practice&#8221; which comprises the rules or grammar of the practice, as well as the conditions which make the practice both possible and vulnerable.
